Millcreek, UT – The 118th U.S. Open has become a reality for local amateur after securing his spot Monday through sectional qualifier.

In a field consisting of 86 professionals and amateurs, Rhett Rasmussen put on a scoring display as he tackled the United States Golf Assocation's northern California qualifier held at Lake Merced Golf Club and The Olympic Club (Ocean Course). With only five spots available at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Rasmussen posted an impressive 6-under-par on the two-round qualifier to clinch his ticket.

Round one for Rasmussen began at the Olympic Club – a venue that has hosted five U.S. Opens. Needing to get off to a hot start, Rasmussen opened his round with an eagle on the par-5 first hole and a birdie on the third. Closing out his front nine with a lone first-round bogey, Rasmussen rolled in three back-nine birdies to post an opening round 5-under-par 66.

Round two proved to be a little more difficult for the Draper native as he began his round alternating bogeys and birdies through his opening five holes. After carding a third birdie on the eighth hole and a front nine 2-under-par, Rasmussen’s two bogeys on 10 and 11 set him one shot outside the projected cut.

Needing just a single birdie somewhere in his final-seven holes, Rasmussen delivered as he circled his four on the 15th hole. Finishing with three pars and a 1-over-par back nine, Lake Merced GC succumbed to Rasmussen’s 1-under-par 71.

Being one of four amateurs to make it through the sectional qualifier, Rasmussen will now book his plane tickets and accommodations to play with the likes of Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter and others in our nation’s biggest event: the U.S. Open.

Good luck, Rhett Rasmussen! We here at the Utah Golf Association will be cheering you on.
