Wisconsin Wins at Entrada; BYU Finishes Strong, Ties for Fourth

ST. GEORGE, Utah (Mar. 22, 2011) – After finishing day one in 10th place, the BYU women’s golf team improved by shooting a final-round 289 (+1) to tie for fourth at the 25th annual BYU Entrada Classic in St. George. The 281 final round tally was the best score of the field, eight shots ahead of the next best team score for the day.BYU benefitted from two top-10 performances by sophomore Kelsey Vines and freshman Annika Afoa to improve on a 5th-place finish in 2010 and post their best finish since 2008. “The girls came out and played great today,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “We got fired up on the range and came out with a lot of enthusiasm and confidence.” Vines, a St. George native, shot a 1-over 73 on the final day to capture third place for her fourth-consecutive top-10 spot. With a three-round total of 223 (+6), Vines was only five strokes off the lead. “Kelsey goes into every tournament expecting to win,” Roberts said. “It is amazing what that kind of attitude can do.” For the first time since donning Cougar blue, Afoa claimed a top-10 finish by shooting a third-round 75. She improved on a first-round 80 by recording a 74 (+2) in round two to go along with her final round 3-over showing. Senior Jade Bollinger shot a tournament-low 68 in round three to card a 236 (+20) tournament total and tie for 34th place overall.Senior Emily Copier and sophomore Amanda Keith were separated by only one stroke with Copier finishing 55th and Keith tied for 56th. Mercedes Attig, who competed as an individual, shot a final-round 90 to tally a tournament total of 278 (+62) and finish tied for 78th. The Cougars’ final tournament before the Mountain West Conference Championships is the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Apr. 3-5 in Chandler, Arizona. “Today’s round helped our confidence a lot,” Roberts said. “We will ride that momentum into the next tournament and the conference championships.”
