The men’s and women’s golf teams of Utah Valley University are holding a fund raising event Saturday, January 29th at the Coral Canyon Golf Course near Hurricane.  The tournament is a four-person scramble format with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $500 per team and includes range balls, cart, and lunch.  Those interested in supporting the golf programs at the school can enter by contacting the UVU men’s golf coach Chris Curran at 801-473-1462.  Hole sponsorships are also available at $200 per hole.  The entry deadline is January 10th. Special rates on hotel rooms are available.
“We are creating opportunities for young men and women,” said women’s golf coach Sue Nyhus, ‘and support from the community would be greatly appreciated.” This year’s UVU women’s team consists of seniosr Abbie Archibald and Julie Smith, junior Stacy Parkinson, sophomores Jordyn Dougal, Monica and Stephanie Fox, and Clarissa Reid. Freshmen players are Celeste Gish, Beverly Pike, and Morgan Workman.  The women’s team competes in the Great West Conference. The team uses a variety of local courses for practice, including Alpine Country Club, Talons Cove , Hobble Creek, East Bay, Spanish Oaks, the Ranches, Sleepy Ridge, Thanksgiving Point, and Soldier Hollow. “Area golf courses have been very helpful in supporting our team,” Nyhus said, “and we try to give back to them in various ways.” The first competition for the women’s team this year is the Red Rocks Invitational at Sedona, Arizona on February 26-27. On March 17-18 the team plays in Florida. The season concludes in April with the Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Arizona on the 4th and 5th, and at the Great West Conference Championship in Montgomery, Texas on April 25-27.
The men’s team consists of lone senior Paul Norman, juniors Andrew Carlin, Jace Nielsen, Joey Olson, and Nicholas Tarasiewicz; sophomore Brad Bills, and freshman Cameron Adam, Taylor Morgan, Parker Redding, and Stratton Schulz. Seven of the ten players are from Utah.  Their first tournament of the year will be in St. George at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational on Feb. 14-15. In March and the early part of April the team plays at Bandon Dunes, Jacksonville, Alabama, and Lexington, Kentucy. It wraps up the spring season with the American Sky Conference championships at Scottsdale, Arizona on Troon North.
