The Battle at Crater Springs: One Lone Player Under Par

Millcreek, UT – Crater Springs Golf Course claimed victory Saturday as lone player finished under par.
Players, 25 to be exact, walked away bruised and bloody with locked exemptions into the State Amateur Championship. One soldier, Jacob Wagstaff, managed to one up the course by posting an incredible 1-under-par 71. On a course that was dense with trees and hazards, the qualifier ended up having the highest cutline to date of 80 (+8) of all qualifiers this season.
Though not pretty, Wagstaff’s scorecard looked the most impressive as he scripted together four birdies, a hole-out eagle on the ninth, and a chip-in birdie on the par-3 12th to go along with his three bogeys and double bogey.
“It was from the right rough [at] 124 yards [out],” Wagstaff said. “The ball mark was about 5 feet short of the pin. I hit a gap wedge. Kind of a crazy round.”
Runner-up Brock Stranger tried to play catch-up on his back nine after a 3-over-par opening nine – including a double and triple bogey. Stringing together four birdies, Stranger landed just a shot short from forcing a playoff and taking on a cooled-down Wagstaff who had finished an hour prior.
Due to a tough layout, Utah Golf Association Rules Officials were being put through the ringer as rulings of all sorts were being requested – an abnormal experience for those who have played in past qualifiers. As always, UGA Officials responded to the call and helped move the qualifier along.
UGA Executive Director Jacob Miller said, “In all my tenure, our team has never seen or given as many rulings as we did today.”
