The Utah Golf Association’s annual Captain’s Cup features the best senior and super-senior players in Utah. Two teams square off in a Ryder Cup-style match. Teams are chosen by the top-two players on the Senior Player Performance Rankings who serve as captains. Their teammates are the top 10 seniors and the top four super-seniors on the Senior Player Performance Rankings.

This season, 2017 Winterchamps Senior Champion Kirk Siddens and Randy Hicken served as captains. The event included morning foursomes matches, lunch and afternoon four-ball and singles matches at Alpine Country Club.

Team Hicken took the early lead after racking up 8 out of 12 points during the morning foursomes. Team Hicken’s David Fischer/Ruben Escobedo earned 2.5 points over Michael Hacker/Tom Jones. Jeff Powers/Steve Smith split the match versus Team Siddens’ Dana Nelson/Rick Lloyd. The match went all square when Team Siddens’ Kurt Jamison/Peter Stuhr earned 2 out of 3 points over Russell Hook/Scott Fairbanks. It was Randy Hicken/Ron Davis who picked up the early lead for the team by earning all 3 points against Kirk Siddens/Guy Child.

Team Siddens’ Tom Jones/Michael Hacker earned 2.5 points versus Ruben Escobedo/David Fischer in the afternoon four-ball matches, and Peter Stuhr/Kurt Jamison also posted 2.5 points for Team Siddens in their match against Steve Smith/Jeff Powars. The Rick Lloyd/Dana Nelson versus Russell Hook/Scott Fairbanks match was all square, and Team Hicken’s Randy Hicken/Ron Davis picked up 2.5 points against Guy Child/Kirk Siddens.

Going into the final singles matches, Team Hicken lead 13 points to 11 points. Tom Jones defeated Ruben Escobedo with 2 out of 3 points to get one back for Team Siddens. Michael Hacker gained all 3 points against Team Hicken’s David Fischer. Steve Smith reeled in 2.5 points in his match against Team Siddens’ Peter Stuhr, and Kurt Jamison of Team Siddens brought in 2.5 points versus Jeff Powars to help Team Siddens take the lead at 19-17. With only four matches left, it was anyone’s ballgame. Russell Hook of Team Hicken won his match against Rick Lloyd 2.5-0.5, but Dana Nelson of Team Siddens earned all three points against Scott Fairbanks.

Only two matches left, and Team Siddens held the lead, 22.5-19.5. Team Captain Randy Hicken defeated Guy Child to earn all three points. It was Team Captain Kirk Siddens who helped secure the team title by earning 2 points against Ron Davis. Team Siddens earned the overall victory by one point over Team Hicken, 24.5-23.5
