Kida, Probst, Nyhus, Gaiotti Win Titles

Brandon Kida, a junior at Layton High School, blew away the field with a final round of 50 Stableford points to win the UGA Winterchamps title by five points over Joe Parkinson Sunday at Bloomington Country Club.

Kida’s 50 point tally was one point shy of the tournament’s single round scoring record set last year by Nick Killpack’s round of 51 points, also at Bloomington Country Club. Kida’s total score of 35-50-85 has been exceeded only four times in the history of the tournament, twice by Nick Killpack, and once by Gipper Finau and Marty Jacks.

In the other divisions Bill Probst won the senior title, Sue Nyhus won the women’s division and Annette Gaiotti won the Women's Senior Division, all winning by comfortable margins.

For Probst and Nyhus, it was their first ever Winterchamps titles.  Probst’s score of 41-44-85 was the second best score in tournament history for the seniors. His score was one point shy of the record set in 2005 by Mike Hacker’s rounds of 42-44-86. 

Probst and Hacker were tied going into Sunday’s final round and Probst pulled away for a comfortable four- point victory margin.  Hacker finished tied for second with Bevan Killpack.  Hacker shot 41-40 while Killpack shot 40-41.  Killpack’s performance moved him into the upper tier of top senior golfers in Utah. His solid play and high finish came in a field that consisted of almost all of the top senior golfers in Utah. He lives in St. George and doesn’t make it to many of the UGA senior events, but this strong showing may give him the incentive to compete in more of the upstate tournaments.

Nyhus’s victory in the women’s division was her first tournament since resigning as coach of the BYU women’s golf team and may be an indication that her focus on golf will return to her own play rather than the play of her team. She shot 40-34-74 to win the title by four shots over young Sirene Blair, who won the tournament last year at the age of 14.  

Karen Killpack led after the first day with a 42, but fell off the second day with a 22 and had to settle for fourth place.
