Cougars take third in WCC Tournament, Fishburn wins Male Golfer of the Year

Rasmussen, Fishburn finish in top 10, BYU ties for third at WCC Championships
SANTEE, Calif. — Rhett Rasmussen and Patrick Fishburn recorded top-10 finishes helping No. 40 BYU men’s golf to a third-place tie at the 2018 West Coast Conference Golf Championships on Wednesday at Carlton Oaks Golf Club.
“Rhett (Rasmussen) had a great finish this week,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “We played okay today, but we didn't play our best on the last few holes. Pepperdine's performance during the tournament was very impressive.”
The Cougars fired a team score of 294 (+6) in round three to finish the tournament at +2, tying with No. 50 Santa Clara. No. 33 Pepperdine claimed the WCC title, finishing the tournament with a record-setting score of -26. With the victory, the Waves claimed their 19th WCC title and first since 2015.
Rasmussen carded 73 (+1) in Wednesday's final round, finishing the event at -5. He fired 37 on the front nine, prior to shooting 36 on the back nine, and had two birdies on the day. Rasmussen tied for third place, logging his third top-10 finish of the 2017-18 season.
Fishburn also finished in the top 10, as the senior recorded a ninth place finish. He has eight top-10 finishes on the year. Fishburn fired a 75 in round three to end the tournament at -1.
Spencer Dunaway placed 21st, while CJ Lee tied for 29th place. Dunaway shot +1 in the third round to finish the tournament at +4. Lee fired a final-round score of 77 to end the event at +8.
Peter Kuest carded his best round of the WCC Golf Championships on Wednesday, with a 73. Kuest tied for 43rd at +16.
BYU men's golf awaits a potential postseason bid to one of six NCAA Division I Regional Championships.

Fishburn, Rasmussen receive 2017-18 WCC honors
PROVO, Utah — Patrick Fishburn was named the 2017-18 West Coast Conference Player of the Year, while Rhett Rasmussen received honorable-mention honors, the league announced Thursday.
Fishburn, who received Co-Player of the Year honors with Pepperdine's Sahith Theegala during the 2016-17 season, also was named to the All-WCC Men's Golf First Team. The senior finished the regular season ranked No. 37, according to Golfstat.com.
Fishburn posted a top-10 finish at the 2018 WCC Golf Championships, tying for ninth place at -1. He compiled eight top-10 finishes during the 2017-18 season, five of which came in the fall, and medaled at the Pacific Invitational for the second-straight year. Fishburn's All-WCC first team honor is his third-straight.
2016-17 WCC Freshman of the Year Rasmussen was named to the 2017-18 All-WCC Men's Golf Honorable-Mention Team. The sophomore totaled three top-10 finishes during the 2017-18 campaign, including a third-place finish at the 2017-18 WCC Championships. Rasmussen fired 72-66-73 to shoot -5 at the postseason tournament.
The 2017-18 All-WCC First Team features 10 student-athletes with five ranking in the top-100 nationally according to GolfStat.com.
