Cougar Women Finish Third at Cowboy Classic
CHANDLER, Ariz. (Apr. 5, 2011) – The BYU women’s golf team bested their second-round total by eight strokes in the final round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic Tuesday to caputre third and post their third-consecutive top-5 finsh. “The girls fought really hard today,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “It was fun to watch them battle and chip away at the lead.” After starting the day tied for 15th, sophomore Kelsey Vines shot a 1-over 73 to tie for 11th place with a 223 (+7) tournament total. Vines has placed in the top-20 in five of her seven appearances this season. Junior Maggie Yuan, who led the Cougars in day one with two rounds of 74, shot a final-round 77 (+5) en route to grabbing a tie for 16th place, her third top-25 finish of the spring. Yuan was trailed close by freshman Annika Afoa, who shot a 2-over 74 in round three to finish tied for 19th. Afoa posted a 226 (+10) tournament total. Senior Jade Bollingermade the most improvement on day two, shooting a 3-under 69 and moving up 30 spots to a tie for 30th place. Amanda Keith, who competed as an individual, and Emily Copier finished tied for 76th and 94th respectively with tournament totals of 242 (+26) and 247 (+31). The Cougars now prepare for the Mountain West Conference tournament, held at the Wigwam Resort in Phoenix April 14-16. “I think these girls will be fired up for conference,” Roberts said. “We will continue practicing as hard as we can and work to put three solid rounds together.” Follow conference-tournament action live by visiting www.golfstat.com.
