Cougar Classic Set This Weekend at Riverside CC

PROVO, Utah (Apr. 11, 2011) – The BYU men’s golf team is set to host the PING Cougar Classic, the 49th edition of the annual event, Apr. 15-16 at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. The 18-team field includes conference foes Air Force, Colorado State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming. The Cougars are currently ranked fifth in the Mountain West in stroke average (73.82). Sophomore Zac Blair’s 72.17 stroke average ranks him seventh among MWC competitors. The Cougars finished second in 2010, just two strokes behind Colorado State. Senior Robbie Fillmore was the top Cougar finisher, carding a tournament total of 209 (-7) to tie for fourth place overall. Two other Cougars finished in the top 15 as sophomore Jordan Rodgers and freshmanZac Blair tied for 13th place at one under par. Since the tournament’s inception in 1963, BYU has captured the team championship 33 times, including 20-consecutive titles from 1969-1988. The last individual champion for BYU was Daniel Summerhays in 2007. Summerhays, a first-team All-American, carded an 11-under 205 to edge out teammate and fellow All-American Jake Ellison by one stroke. Rounds one and two will be played Friday, Apr. 15 with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. MT.
