Blake Loses Sudden Death Playoff to John Cook’s Birdie

Jay Don Blake, who will be inducted into the Utah Golf Hall of Fame next month, birdied the 18th hole in the Outback Steakhouse Pro Am and then watched John Cook chunk a shot into the water and double bogey the final hole to force a sudden death playoff—and so back to the 18th tee they went.

Cook erased the memory of the nightmare chunk shot and birdied the playoff hole to win the title and Jay Don had to settle for second place money—whatever that was. News releases didn’t mention second place money, but Cook trucked home $255,000.

The tournament was held at the TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz, Florida.

Blake and his amateur partner won the Pro-Am division of the tournament.

Blake’s three-day tally was 66-68-70-204. Cook shot 66-65-73-204.

The other three Utahns in the tournament finished one shot behind each other. Mike Reid shot 71-73-73-217 and finished in 43rd place. Keith Clearwater shot 73-74-71-218. Dan Forsman shot 73-75-71-219.

Forsman is also being inducted into the Utah Golf Hall of Fame next month. Reid was inducted in 2007.
