2018 Utah State Amateur Media Day

Fruit Heights – Former champions, media members and the likes gathered for a round of golf and an awards ceremony on Friday for the annual Utah State Amateur Media Day.

Oakridge Country Club, the host site for this year’s State Amateur, welcomed golfers of every level for a day out of the office and onto the course. Those playing got a sneak peek into the course conditions and setup for those lucky qualifiers who made it to the big dance. With closest-to-the-hole competitions and trophies for the top-media competitors (Mike Sorensen of the Deseret News and Brian Taylor of Real Golf Radio), a little-extra motivation for a good finish was present for those enjoying the round.

Following play, guests gathered in the clubhouse’s banquet room for a short-award ceremony and luncheon – a plethora of American-Chinese cuisine was cooked and served by the club’s staff.

Club President Chesley Erickson addressed the audience with a few remarks – discussing the excitement the club has in hosting the State Amateur for the fifth time and the upcoming Web.com’s Utah Championship.

Concluding the event, media members from local news outlets – Deseret News, ABC4, etc. – were given the opportunity to talk with some past champions: Kelton Hirsch (reigning champion), Dan Horner (2008), Nick Nelson (2007), Michael McRae (2005), Darrin Overson (1998) and Steve Borget (1985).

Each champion was given the chance to relive the glory days and discuss the honor it was to win the one of the biggest and most well-known tournaments in the nation at the same time as discussing this year’s tournament.

With the State Amateur being a week away, we can only wait to see what history will be made.

We’d like to express our gratitude to Oakridge CC for being an exceptional host and venue as always.
