USGA Amateur Qualifier at Valley View Golf Course

Valley View Golf Course hosted the US Amateur Local Qualifying tournament where only 8 spots were available. KJ Ofahengaue and Oscar Maxfield both had outstanding performances where they finished tied for first at -6 (66). The cut came in at -3 (69) which displays the level of skill we had at today’s event. Peter Kim, Max Brenchley, Cade Anderson, Daichi Molde, Austin Shelley, and Steele Dewald were able to claim the other 6 spots. Dewald secured his spot in a 3 person playoff that ended on the first hole after Dewald birdied.

Ofahengaue shared some insight into how he played today and what he thought of it, “This was the best round of my life, so much hard work and luck at the same time”. Ofahengaue eagled hole 3, a par 4, which gave him quite the boost for the rest of his round. He shared with us that he was on his second shot and had 172 yards in. It was a blind shot and he opted for his 8 iron. ” I heard someone say it went in, but you try not to listen to that and let it get to your head. It was Willard [Richards] who actually checked the hole and that’s how I found out it went in”.

The final qualifying round will be held at the Salt Lake Country Club on July 22nd. Players who qualify there will head onto the Championship which will be held at Hazeltine National Golf Club and Chaska Town Course in Minnesota, August 12th-18th.
