Utah Women’s State Amateur Championship to Return to Historic Salt Lake City Course

Salt Lake City’s Bonneville Golf Course will host the 2018 Utah Women’s State Amateur conducted by the Utah Golf Association July 30-August 2, 2018.

SALT LAKE CITY – Jacob Miller, the Utah Golf Association’s Rules and Competitions Director, announced today that the 112th Utah Women’s State Amateur will be played at Salt Lake City’s historic Bonneville Golf Course July 30-August 2, 2018.

Miller said, “After more than 25 years, the Utah Golf Association is very excited to be returning to one of Utah’s most beloved golf courses to hold the Women’s State Amateur. Salt Lake City Golf has been a great partner of the UGA for many years and we look to continue that great relationship by hosting our flagship women’s championship at Bonneville Golf Course. Bonneville is a wonderful design with an impressive variety of holes that will provide multiple strategic options for the players, especially when we reach match play.”

Designed by William Bell and opened for play in 1929, Bonneville Golf Course is one of the most popular 18-hole championship courses in Utah. Renowned for its hilly terrain and challenging greens, the course sits on the East Bench of Salt Lake City, just five minutes from the heart of downtown. The course offers views of both the surrounding mountains and the Salt Lake Valley. Its length, undulating greens and mature trees make the course very challenging.

Bonneville GC first hosted the Utah Women’s State Amateur in 1946, which was won by Utah Golf Hall of Fame member Mary Lou Baker, who recently passed away at the age of 96. Fellow Hall of Fame member Marge Fillis won the Women’s State Amateur at Bonneville GC in 1958. Bonneville GC hosted the UGA’s most prestigious women’s tournament again in 1965, won by Sue Thompson. 1992 was the last year Bonneville GC hosted the Women’s State Amateur and where Lisa Imamura captured her second of two State Amateur wins.

When asked about Bonneville hosting the 2018 Women’s State Amateur, Imamura said, “Wow! It's been 25 years since the last time Bonneville GC hosted the Women's State Am? That's really hard to believe because I am only 39 years old. All kidding aside, I think that Bonneville is a great course to host the 2018 Utah Women’s State Amateur. It can be challenging at times. But, if you keep the ball in play the course will be fair to you. It will be interesting to see how the players strategize on this course during the match play portion. Are they going to ‘go for the kill’ and hope that the course is forgiving or are they going to play it safe and hope their opponent does as well?  I look forward to watching some great golf being played by a lot of amazingly talented women at Bonneville this year,”

In an effort to name Utah’s best woman amateur the Utah Golf Association uses a 36-hole stroke play qualifying tournament to determine the low 16 players who then advance to a match play format to crown the champion. The stroke play rounds will be played July 30-31 with the match play rounds on August 1st and 2nd.
