The oldest continuous tournament in the world is upon us again, the 119th Utah State Amateur Championship, hosted by Ogden Golf & Country Club and Hubbard Golf Course and Hill Air Force Base. Like always, the thirty-six-hole stroke play qualifying began on Monday, July 10th and concluded on Tuesday, July 11th at both facilities. Of 288 contestants, only the top 64 advanced to match play, including past champions Jerimie Mongomery (1994), Darrin Overson (1998), Nick Nelson (2007), Jon Wright (2012, 2014) and Patrick Fishburn (2016).

Fishburn showed up ready to defend his title and carded an unbelievable nine-under 63 at Hubbard to start the stroke play portion off with a bang. He topped the leaderboard by three shots over Preston Alder. Patrick posted a second-round score of 71 (+1) at Ogden G&CC to claim the second match play seed behind Utah State University Golf’s Braydon Swapp.

Swapp kicked off the week with three-under 67 on Monday at Ogden. The Aggie was bogey free on the front nine, with birdies on 1, 4 and 6, to card 32. With two bogeys and two birdies on the back for even par, he was still in position to qualify for match play and possibly surpass Fishburn.

Braydon returned for his final round of qualifying at Hubbard Golf Course ready to fight for the top. He posted his lowest score ever of 66 (-6) to overtake Patrick Fishburn to clinch medalist honors and the No. 1 match play seed.

“It was a solid two days of stroke play,” stated Swapp. “I followed my game plan, and it paid off. Moving on to match play, I feel like I’m in position off the tee to be able to win my matches.”

The Round of 64 matches will begin on Wednesday, July 12th at 7:30 a.m.
