SUU’s Prasurtwong Secures Third Place Finish As Play Concludes In Palm Desert

PALM DESERT, Calif. – Southern Utah’s Kamonwan (Poy) Prasurtwong finished in third place at the 2017 Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon, shooting a 74 in the third and final round at The Classic Club.
Prasurtwong entered the day tied for third, and was able to claim the spot by shooting a 223 (75, 74, 74) for the event. This is Prasurtwong’s best finish of the 2017-18 campaign so far, after placing in second three different times last season. It’s also the best finish a Lady Thunderbird has had so far this season. She was +7 for the event.
“We’re really proud of the way she competed and hung in there,” SUU head coach Richard Church said about the sophomore’s performance. “She was able to grind out three good rounds on a rather difficult golf course, so we were really happy to see that.”
Kyla Smith was second for the Thunderbirds, shooting an 81 in her final round to finish with a 223 (85, 74, 81) for the event. That put her in a tie for 36th on the leaderboard.
Nicole Jones was third for the Thunderbirds, shooting a 81 in the final round to bring her three-round total to 242 (83, 78, 82).
Lindsay Aleman shot a 249 (81, 86, 82) and Miranda Reyes shot a 252 (85, 88, 79) to finish fourth and fifth for the Thunderbirds. Reyes was able to bounce back strong on Sunday, carding a score nine shots lower in the third round than the second.
As a team the Thunderbirds shot a 315 on the final day, bringing their two-day total to 951 (324, 312, 315). That put them in ninth place on the team leaderboard
The Thunderbirds had three individuals compete at the event. Katie Wills shot a 246 (81, 83, 82), Launa Wilson shot a 256 (85, 86, 85) and Taylor Bandley shot a 269 (84, 98, 88).
Santa Clara won the event, shooting 897 (303, 295, 299) over the two days. Hawaii (900) and UC Riverside (919) followed them on the team leaderboard.
Santa Clara’s Kristin Le won the event, finishing on top of the leaderboard with a 219 (77, 73, 69). The only other player to finish ahead of Prasurtwong was Hawaii’s Kaci Masuda, who shot a 221 (75, 74, 72).
The Lady T-Birds have one event remaining this fall, as they’ll compete in the 2017 Aggie Invitational. The event will be played at the New Mexico State Golf Club in Las Cruces, New Mexico from October 9-11.
