SUU Men’s Golf Ties For Fifth As Bill Cullum Invitational Comes To A Close

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Propelled by strong performances from sophomores Jake Vincent and Ali Hameed, the Thunderbird men’s golf team finished in a tie for fifth at the 2017 Bill Cullum Invitational.

Vincent had a solid final round, shooting a two-under 70 to bring his three day total to 217 (73, 74, 70). He ended the day with the lowest score on the leaderboard for the Thunderbirds, finishing the event in a tie for 21st.

Vincent wasn’t the only T-Bird to go under-par on Tuesday, as Hameed finished the day with a 71 to bring his two-day total to 218 (74, 73, 71). That put him in a tie for 25th on the leaderboard. One of the players he tied with was senior Fidel Concepcion, who shot a 76 on the final day to also shoot a 218 (72, 70, 76).

Vincent, Hameed and Concepcion all earned Top 25 finishes at the event.

Samuel Butler (225) and Ethan Gray (240) finished in a tie for 52nd and 86th respectively.

As a team, the Thunderbirds were very consistent over the three rounds. They shot a 292 in the opening round, and followed that up with 293’s in the second and third round to bring their final team score to a 878. That finish put them in a tie for fifth with Seattle University and Weber State.

The Thunderbirds had four individuals competing in the event as well.

Christian Karren ended up being SUU’s top individual at the event, finishing with a 227 (75, 80, 72) to end the day in a tie for 56th. Austin Jaramillo finished one shot behind Karren, shooting a 778 (75, 74, 79).

Bradley Collet finished in a tie for 77th with a 233 (74, 80, 79) and Humza Hameed finished in 91st with a 253 (89, 80, 84).

Utah State (848) ended up claiming the team title, followed by UC Santa Barbara (850) and Long Beach State (855).

Cal State Fullerton’s Derek Castillo claimed the individual title, shooting a 202 (72, 65, 65).

The Thunderbirds will now turn their attention to the Price’s “Give Em 5” Invitational, which will be played at Butterfield Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas. The event will start on Friday, October 20.
