Each month, the UGA spotlights one of our devoted volunteers to express our deep appreciation for all they do and to help you, our loyal members, become well acquainted with them. The month of October features a devoted course rater, Lisa Meeks.

Lisa is in it for the challenge. She has been volunteering for the UGA by helping with the USGA Course Rating System for five years now. Her favorite part of it all is the challenge it brings to her. Lisa graduated from Indiana University, where she is originally from, with a bachelor’s degree in business. With her love for numbers, course rating has been a great fit that provides a sought-after challenge.

She was introduced to the game of golf by her husband, Bob, whom she met in SanDiego, California, while working for FileNet, a software company. Lisa started picking up the game right around the time their professional career brought them to Utah ten years ago. They joined Hidden Valley Country Club and dove into the environment headfirst. It was hard for her to leave sunny San Diego; however, she loves the social aspect that comes along with the game of golf.

Lisa and her husband try to fit in nine holes in the evening here and there these days, but it was the Women’s League at Hidden Valley where she started developing lifetime relationships with other golfers. It was her friends in the league who introduced the idea of volunteering with the UGA. They knew her love for numbers and a challenge and saw that she would be great at course rating.

Other than course rating, she has helped the UGA with live-scoring once during the Utah State Amateur Championship and is now playing with the idea of getting into the Rules of Golf by attending the UGA Rules of Golf Workshop this winter.

Besides golf, Lisa loves to play tennis and “play mom” to her two kids, who are now moved out and going to school.

The UGA is immensely honored to have volunteers like Lisa. These volunteers allow the UGA to fulfill its mission to promote interest in the game of golf by encouraging, organizing, supporting, sponsoring, and administering golfing activities and programs. It’s the volunteers who make the UGA what it is today.
