Billy Casper Day Declared by Governor Herbert, Ceremony Monday at Thanksgiving Point

GOVERNOR HERBERT DECLARES JUNE 11 BILLY CASPER DAY
Utah resident and Hall of Fame golfer Billy Casper recognized with a day in his honor

Salt Lake City, UT (June 4, 2012) – In a ceremony held in conjunction with the American Indian Services Shootout at Thanksgiving Point golf tournament at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club on Monday, June 4, Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert announced that Monday, June 11, will officially be Billy Casper Day throughout the state of Utah.

A native of San Diego, Billy Casper and his family first moved to Utah in 1974. After a return to San Diego while he competed on the Champions Tour they moved back to Springville in 2004.

Since his first visit to Utah in 1959 to play in the Utah Open, Billy has tirelessly championed the State, its people and its culture, making his adopted home his permanent residence,” Governor Herbert stated. “In addition to his legendary prowess as a professional golfer, Mr. Casper has been a treasured asset to the people of Utah through his considerable support of a wide range of important charitable organizations for many years.”

As another highlight of Billy Casper Day on June 11, Casper will travel that evening from his home in Springville to San Francisco to participate in a wide range of activities during the week of the U.S. Open, to be played at The Olympic Club, June 14-17. It was at the storied Olympic Club in 1966 that Casper collected his most famous victory when he made up seven shots on Arnold Palmer over the final nine holes of regulation play and won the U.S. Open trophy in an 18-hole playoff with Palmer the following day.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has asked Casper to participate in several events during the U.S. Open this year including a presentation to USGA members at a special on-site event at The Olympic Club, several book-signing sessions for fans who purchase his new book, “The Big Three and Me,” and the trophy-presentation ceremony for this year’s U.S. Open winner.

During his illustrious career Casper won 51 times on the PGA Tour, the seventh highest total in history, and collected three major championships while also earning more Ryder Cup points in his career than any other U.S. Team player ever. He is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and the Utah Golf Hall of Fame. In April, he published his autobiography, “The Big Three and Me.”

Casper, reflecting on his illustrious golf career and his many years as a Utah resident stated, “I am grateful to Governor Herbert for this very high honor. I love the state of Utah and the people here who warmly welcomed me so many years ago and continue to treat me and my family so well. My wife Shirley and I, along with our entire family, want to thank the people of Utah for their kindness; we cherish our life in this great state.”
